Medigap, Explained for Union City Households
Medicare Supplement plans in Union City, NJ are for people who want to keep Original Medicare and limit the bills it leaves behind. Parts A and B pay a big share of your care. They do not pay all of it, and there is no yearly cap on your part.
A Medigap policy steps in after Medicare pays. Depending on the letter you choose, it can pick up deductibles, coinsurance and hospital costs. We help you decide whether that trade, a higher monthly premium for steadier bills, makes sense for you.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
What Gaps Are We Talking About?
With Original Medicare alone, you pay a $1,736 hospital deductible each benefit period in 2026. After the $283 Part B deductible, you usually owe 20 percent of approved outpatient costs. A long hospital stay or a run of scans can add up fast.
Medigap exists to soften those numbers. It does not replace Medicare. Medicare still pays first, and the policy pays its share second.
- Hospital coinsurance and extra hospital days
- Part B coinsurance on doctor visits, tests and therapy
- Blood, skilled nursing coinsurance and hospice costs, depending on the letter
- Emergency care abroad on some letters, handy for trips to family in Latin America
Plan Letters, Not Brand Names
Medigap policies are labeled with letters, such as G or N. A Plan G from one carrier carries the identical benefit list as a Plan G from any other. What differs is the price and how the company sets future rate increases.
Plan G is a common pick for people new to Medicare. Apart from the annual $283 Part B deductible, it picks up almost every gap. Plan N often costs less each month, but you may pay small copays at some visits. Newcomers to Medicare since the start of 2020 cannot buy Plan C or Plan F.
Because benefits match by letter, comparing is mostly about cost and company history. We line up the policies we offer so you can see both.
Timing Matters More Than You Think
The ideal moment to buy is a six-month stretch that opens once you are both 65-plus and on Part B. Inside it, insurers must accept you at standard rates whatever your medical history.
Wait until later and you may have to answer health questions. A heart condition or diabetes could raise your price or make approval harder. That is why we talk about Medigap early, often before your Part B even starts. Our turning 65 help page explains the related dates.
Pair It With Prescription Coverage
Supplements on the market now leave out prescriptions entirely. Most people pair a supplement with a separate Part D drug plan. Skipping Part D when you first qualify can saddle you with a lasting surcharge on drug premiums.
We price both pieces together, so the monthly total is clear before you decide.
Medigap or Medicare Advantage?
The two paths work very differently. A supplement rides on Parts A and B, so any Medicare-participating doctor across the nation is open to you, minus networks or referral slips. Medicare Advantage plans use networks and often cost less each month, but you pay copays as you go.
If you spend months away from Union City, or see specialists at several hospitals, Medigap may feel freer. If your budget is tight and your doctors are in one network, an Advantage plan may fit better. We walk through both honestly.

If I join Part C now, can I buy a supplement down the road?
You can return to Original Medicare during certain windows, but a Medigap company may ask health questions if your guaranteed window has passed. Ask us before you make that move.
Do all Medigap companies charge the same?
No. The benefits for each letter are set, but prices vary by company. That is why a side-by-side comparison helps.
Will a supplement cover dental or eyeglasses?
Generally no. Routine dental, vision and hearing care sit outside Medigap. See our dental, vision and hearing page for options.
Can I keep my doctor at a Manhattan hospital?
If the doctor accepts Medicare, a Medigap policy works there too. There is no network to check.
